Genesis - Abacab

Phil Collins might be swinging away the late 1990s but in 1981 he was sharpening his pop chops from his first solo offering to this, the first Genesis album to break the hallowed million-copy mark stateside. But Abacab wasn't entirely about charting singles ("No Reply At All", "Man on the Corner" and the title track); it still exhibited some late-stage evidence of a trio courting the art-rock muse that had graced its past ("Who Dunnit", "Dodo", "Keep It Dark"). However, by 1983's eponymous follow-up, the hit factory that was Genesis in the mid- to late-1980s was operating full steam ahead, and the angel Gabriel's spectre had all but vanished. Then, there were truly only three.

Propaganda - A Secret Wish

ドイツはデュッセルドルフで結成された5人組のエレポップ・バンド。アバを意識したということからもうかがえる徹底したポップセンスとドイツらしい重厚なエレクトロニクス、そして84年のデビュー曲でフリッツ・ラングのカルト映画「ドクトル・マブゼ」を題材にするというあたりのゴシック趣味が渾然となり、本国はもとより、イギリスやフランスでもヒットを記録した。

実質的なプロデュースはトレヴァー・ホーンではなく、彼を長きにわたって支え、現在はトレヴァー・ホーンの新バンド、ザ・プロデューサーズのメンバーでもあるステファン・リプソンが行っているが、それがかえってよかったのではないかと感じられるこのアルバム『シークレット・ウィッシュ』は、今でも信奉者の多い傑作だ。

その後は、数多くのヴァージョンちがいやリミックスをシングルでリリース。また、ZTTのアーティストとしては珍しくライヴに力を入れ、アメリカまでツアーした。デビュー当時にまだ19歳だった女性ヴォーカルのひとりクラウディア・ブルッケンは、ZTTの運営者のひとりポール・モーリーと結婚し、プロパガンダとしてはもちろん、グループを脱退した後もソロやコラボ作、そしてACTというユニットなどを通しZTTとの関係性を維持し、また積極的に活動を行った。

Pink Floyd - Animals

Inspired in part by George Orwell's political fable Animal Farm, Roger Waters condemns the avarice and inequalities of capitalism, metaphorically and musically grouping humans as pigs, dogs, and sheep. The pigs are self-righteous hypocrites inflicting their beliefs on everyone else, the dogs greedy money-grabbers, and the sheep witless followers. Dark, cynical, and brilliantly composed, Animals is an ingenious and under-acknowledged album.

アル・シュミットの手によってミックスされた1stアルバムのアメリカ版。ヘビ女をモチーフにしたジャケットのインパクトがとても強烈だったため、こちらをデビューアルバムとして認識している人も多いのではないだろうか。日本版との大きな違いは、「アクロバット」がカットされていることと、「東風」が「YELLOW MAGIC」と改題され、吉田美奈子のコーラスが重ねられていること。音質は全体的に丸みがかっていて、かなり聴きやすくなった印象。細野氏自身は、「日本版のミックスのほうが気に入っている」と発言している。

Cocteau Twins - Blue Bell Knoll

Featuring the ethereal vocals of Elizabeth Fraser, along with the progressive musicianship of multi-instrumentalist Robin Guthrie and bassist Simon Raymonde, Scotland's Cocteau Twins were one of the more prolific electro-pop ensembles to emerge during the 1980's. Robin Guthrie's shimmering guitar and keyboard sound is carefully exaggerated by the use of various studio accoutrement, particularly tape loops and drum machines. Elizabeth Fraser's shimmering voice is used to great effect on the title cut and other surreal compositions like "A Kissed Out Red Floatboat" and "For Phoebe's Still A Baby." Moderately enjoyable but only 35 minutes long, this is not a definitive recording by the Cocteau Twins. Anticipating the success of goth-pop peers Dead Can Dance, the band is still in decent form on Blue Bell Knoll.

Peter Gabriel - So

So is generally regarded as a peak in Peter Gabriel's recording career, notable both for its solid set of songs and lush production. For Gabriel, who'd been putting his music in theatrical contexts ever since his days with Genesis, the modern sound of So (coproduced with Daniel Lanois) was a dramatic conceit that effectively played off the organic roots of many of its songs. The album's big hit was "Sledgehammer," the English rocker's somewhat stilted take on the Stax/Volt style of rhythm & blues. Gabriel is much more powerful on his own art-rock songs, such as "Red Rain," which evokes nuclear ruin with its cascading rush of guitars and synthesizers. "Don't Give Up" is perhaps Gabriel's best ballad, with Kate Bush's heavenly second vocal enough to give anybody encouragement. But the song that best exploits So's blend of technology and soul is "In Your Eyes," a beguiling rhythmic tapestry in which Gabriel duets with Youssou N'Dour.
