David Bowie - Diamond Dogs

George Orwell's classic tale of totalitarianism, 1984, was the inspiration for a project that David Bowie hoped would further solidify his standing as a rock visionary. Bowie was a natural artist to helm a musical companion to Orwell's allegory, since his own music exhibits an innate alienation. The concept ultimately broke down, but the music didn't. "Rebel Rebel" has become a rock staple, while "Sweet Thing," "Candidate," and the forthright yet experimental title track (Bowie as puppet master) offer additional highlights. Still, despite such benchmarks and its conceptual flaws, Diamond Dogs is best listened to as a thematic collection

デヴィッド・ボウイのグラム時代のアルバムとしては2番目に重要な『Aladdin Sane』は、スマートで先鋭的な曲が満載で、30年を経た現在でもロックの古典として色あせない魅力をもっている。注目すべきトラックとして、ミック・ロンソンのギターがうなり、ミック・ウッドマンシーのドラムが連打される「Panic in Detroit」、ピアノがリードを取った、ボウイのしゃれっ気にぴったりのパーティー・ナンバー「Watch that Man」、みだらで熱っぽい「"Cracked Actor」、パンクっぽい「Jean Genie」、そしてやたらと騒々しいカヴァーとして生まれ変わった「Let's Spend the Night Together」などがある。「Time」がアルバム『The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust』のシアトリカルな感覚を取り戻しているのに対し、「Drive in Saturday」、「The Prettiest Star」、「Lady Grinning Soul」の3曲はボウイが70年代後半に打ち出すことになる「プラスティック・ソウル」を予告するものだ。

このアルバムが制作された年は、ボウイがイギー・ポップ＆ザ・ストゥージズの『Raw Power』、ルー・リードの『Transformer』という2つの傑作をプロデュースした年でもある。そのことを考えれば、『Aladdin Sane』はいっそう深い感銘を与えてくれるだろう。

リリースから30年を経た今もなお本作のサウンドは、信じられないほど新鮮であり、まったく時代を感じさせず啓示的でさえある。長年にわたり、架空の幻想的な物語である本作からさまざまな音楽が生みだされた。本作のテーマが、本作よりあとに生まれたパンクのスタイル、さらにはエルヴィスやカート・コバーンの死までも含む、ロックの全歴史を備えていることは今なお驚くほど痛快である。本作でボウイは50年代から60年代のロックのひな型に、劇場的要素を組み合わせて新たな神話を作り上げた。その点では構成としてはブルース・スプリングスティーンにも似ている。けれども、それ以上に驚きなのは、故ミック・ロンソンのギターやスパイダーズ・フロム・マースのサウンドの素晴らしさが今だに色あせていないことだ。エンディングの「Rock 'N' Roll Suicide」でボウイのバックでバンドが歌う「Wonderful」というコーラスは、本作のことを語っているのかもしれない。また、本30周年記念盤にはディスク2があり、デモ音源やシングル（まさにベルリンのキャバレー風の「Arnold Corns」など）が収録されている。それに、ここ10年近く入手不可能だった、極めて退廃的な「Sweet Head」などの貴重なアウトテイクも数曲収められている

Yes - Yesyears

This extensive box includes not only a fine mixture of classics and less familiar songs, but plenty of previously unheard material as well. Along the way, YESYEARS manages to encapsulate the band's career. Yes was one of the first progressive rock bands, achieving a perfect blend of hard-hitting rock excitement and sophisticated, classical-derived structure. Yes began by adapting other people's songs to the band's expansive, post-psychedelic style ("Every Little Thing", "Everydays"), but as the band grew more confident, it constructed ever more complex opuses full of virtuosic instrumental displays and complex shifts of metre and mood ("Starship Trooper", "Yours is no Disgrace").
The arrival of keyboard wizard Rick Wakeman meant the incorporation of elaborate synthesizer tapestries and a more extensive guitar/keyboard interplay ("Roundabout", "Close to the Edge"). By the time he was replaced by former Mainhorse/Refugee member Patrick Moraz, Yes's sound had reached its most sophisticated, abstract extremes, and the band truly earned its "art rock" tag ("Sound Chaser"). More personnel changes would ensue, and by the early '80s, Yes returned with a more stripped-down, rhythm-basedsound ("Owner of a Lonely Heart"). YESYEARS covers all of this and more, with enough surprises to keep even hardcore fans on their toes.
