Norah Jones - The Fall

Norah has taken a new direction on the The Fall, experimenting with different sounds and a new set of collaborators, including Jacquire King, a noted producer and engineer who has worked with Kings of Leon, Tom Waits and Modest Mouse. Jones enlisted several songwriting collaborators, including Ryan Adams and Okkervil River's Will Sheff, as well as her frequent partners Jesse Harris & Richard Julian. Musicians include drummers Joey Waronker (Beck, R.E.M.) and James Gadson (Bill Withers), keyboardist James Poyser (Erykah Badu, Al Green), and guitarists Marc Ribot (Tom Waits, Elvis Costello) and Smokey Hormel (Johnny Cash, Joe Strummer). The first single/video is for the album's lead track 'Chasing Pirates'.

Moby - Ambient

Long before music marketers coined the term ambient to describe ethereal electronic music that's too slow to dance to, Moby had already written several songs that fit nicely into this genre. They are included, along with newer material, on this album. Moby's more conventional song structures will appeal to those who find Robert Fripp and Brian Eno's experimentation unpalatable. "Myopia" is a good representation of Moby's ability to write accessible ambient music that never strays too far into the abstract.

David Bowie - Scary Monsters

The last of David Bowie's long run of classic albums is best remembered for its superb electropop-ish hit singles "Ashes To Ashes" and "Fashion". But while these may be representative of the record's quality, they're very different in sound to the rest of the album. Scary Monsters is fiercely and unforgivingly a rock album, reflecting strongly the influences of both British and American post-punk artists, particularly Television's Tom Verlaine, one of whose songs, "Kingdom Come", appears here. The uncompromising Robert Fripp plays a significant role, which he accurately described as "spraying burning guitar all over" the songs. Scary Monsters is Bowie's most abrasive and ferocious piece of work, and its power to needle and astonish has remained undimmed over the years.

黒人音楽に接近した前作『ヤング・アメリカン』と同じく、1975年にアメリカで製作され翌年1月に発表。全6曲ながら、非常に高い完成度を誇る改心の傑作。

ロック・サウンドをあえて破棄し「プラスティック・ソウル」と呼ばれた前作とは打って変わって、ソリッドでシンプル、かつ前作で結実したファンキーさも湛えたロック・サウンドが全編を痛快に貫く。奇妙なミドル・テンポの<2>と、鋭利でスリリングな展開が圧倒的な<5>、退廃的な雰囲気の<6>などが出色のできだ。また詞が美しいことも、この作品の特徴といえる。

David Bowie - Heroes

『Low』で始まり『Lodger』で終わるデヴィッド・ボウイのベルリン3部作の第2作目となるこの『Heroes』のころ、ボウイはドラッグの常用から足を洗い、新しい音楽を作ろうとしていた。『Beauty and The Beast』はHuman Leagueの『Love Action』に影響を与えた。そしてアルバム・タイトルにもなっている『Heroes』は、音楽史上の最高傑作ともいえる。レコーディングをテクニックでどれだけ左右できるかを示した作品で、たとえば、彼は色々な音を拾うために、8つのマイクを用意して歌った。このため、彼が山や月で歌っているように聴こえるのだ。『Low』と同じく『Heroes』は二部構成になっており、インストゥルメンタル中心の曲もある。ボウイとプロデューサーのBrian Enoによる音楽を、8つのマイクで記録するスタッフは大変であった。 ボウイ作品として必須の一枚ではないかもしれないが、ティン・マシーン以前のボウイそのものの作品である。
