The soundtrack for a film that remained incomplete for over a decade, Uncle Meat is one of the finest albums produced by Zappa and the original Mothers of Invention. Showcasing every facet of the band, Uncle Meat is filled with quirky Zappa instrumentals like the title track and the "Dog Breath Variations," rock staples like "Cruisin' For Burgers" and "Mr. Green Genes," and an epic suite of instrumental fervor centered around the jazz-rock forerunner, "King Kong". This double CD edition also contains audio excerpts from the movie and a later song called "Tengo Na Minchia Tanta."

Jimi Hendrix- First Rays Of The New Rising Sun

The guy was damn ingenious with a guitar, but not half as industrious as the folks who've packaged and repackaged his posthumous material. First Rays of the New Rising Sun, however, is an attractive assortment of "spiritual, very earthy" late recordings that surfaced in the '70s via The Cry of Love, Crash Landing, Rainbow Bridge, and War Heroes. Hendrix appeared to be in transition between flamboyant showman and serious musician personas at the time (meaning his work, had he lived, might have been twice as meritorious and half as fun), and that makes many of these tracks all the more interesting.

Suzanne Vega - Suzanne Vega

Though not the songs that would put her on the pop music map--that would come with 1987's Solitude Standing--Vega's first album, Suzanne Vega, shows her folky song-writing origins and, song-for-song, may still be her best. Produced by Patti Smith guitarist Lenny Kaye, the sound is softly sculpted by Kaye's silvery guitar and an airy, occasional string section, matching the dream-like introspection of "Queen and the Soldier" and the surreal word play of "Small Blue Thing". Vega's philosophical, quiet-but-confident approach would open the door for a second generation of female singer-songwriters like Dar Williams and Shawn Colvin. Her debut remains an unassuming sleeper for one of the 1980s best folk or pop albums.

Digitally remastered and expanded two disc (CD/DVD) edition of the Prog Rock band's classic 1974 album, released to coincide with King Crimson's 40th anniversary. The CD features three extra tracks (two previously unreleased) including pre-overdub mixes of the title track and 'Fallen Angel', which illustrate perfectly why the album has been such an enduring influence. The DVD features a 5.1 DTS mix and high resolution stereo mixes plus rare performance footage of four tracks broadcast by French TV in 1974. Presented as digipak in a slipcase with new sleeve notes by Robert Fripp and King Crimson biographer Sid Smith along with rare photos and archive material.

Frank Zappa - Make A Jazz Noise Here

One of three releases showcasing his talented but short-lived 1988 big band, Make a Jazz Noise Here features Zappa's group on extended jams, some of his most ambitious instrumental works, and a few requisite concert favorites. Only Zappa would sandwich Igor Stravinsky's Royal March From L'Histoire Du Soldat the theme from Bela Bartok's Piano Concerto No. 3 between his own "City of Tiny Lights" and "Sinister Footwear, 2nd Movement," and only he could pull it off. The first disc is the strongest, featuring big band arrangements of "Eat That Question," "Black Napkins," and "Big Swifty," and climaxing with an amazing, slow-groove rendition of "King Kong". Some of the longer jams will be of most interest to fanatics, but the performances are solid throughout, and even the biggest neophytes will appreciate these renditions of some of Zappa's most daunting material.
